Container Hire

What sizes of storage containers are available?

The standard sizes are as follows –

40ft x 8ft x 8ft 6in
20ft x 8ft x 8ft 6in
10ft x 8ft x 8ft 6in
8ft x 7 ft x 7ft 4in
6ft 6in x 6ft x 6ft 2in.

However if you are prepared to buy the container we can convert one to any size you want.

Where can I site my container?

You can site your container wherever you like. If we can get it there we will (see transport faq).

What should I put underneath the storage container?

Storage containers should be placed on level ground, if not you may find it difficult to open and shut the container doors. Our drivers can help with the positioning; however, it is the hirers’ responsibility to ensure the ground is adequately prepared and that you have the materials to make the storage container sit level. Examples of suitable materials are railways sleepers underneath the ends of the storage container, or concrete blocks under the corners.

How heavy are the containers?

10 ft containers are approx 1 tonne
20 ft containers are approx 2.2 tonnes
40 ft containers are approx 4 tonnes

How secure are storage containers?

Storage containers are very secure. They are constructed from high tensile steel, with a 27mm treated plywood floor mounted on steel cross members. Containers have double opening doors secured with lockable locking bars as standard. For all hire units we fit an extra high security lock box and supply a high security lock.

Do I need planning permission for a storage container?

Storage containers are non-permanent so in most cases not. However, it is worth checking if the storage container is going to be in a residential area, near a road junction, or likely to cause complaints from neighbours.

If we rent storage containers, can we buy them at a later date?

Providing we know before we send the container to you that you may wish to purchase it at a later date this can be arranged. However, if you take a hire container without informing us of your possible intent to buy it, this will not be possible.

If we purchase storage containers, will you buy them back at a later date?

Yes, the price will be subject to the market value at the time and transport costs to collect the storage containers.

How and when do we pay for the storage container?

You can pay for a storage container by a variety of methods including cash, cheque, credit card (Visa/MasterCard) or debit card. When hiring a storage container the first payment required is the first four weeks container rental and the delivery and collection charges. These must be received prior to release of container(s). Thereafter, a standing order payment will be set up.

Who is responsible for insuring the containers when they are on site?

The customer is responsible for insurance of the units.

Do the storage containers have a problem with condensation?

As with any enclosed space condensation can be an issue. To combat this, the majority of our storage containers are fitted with ventilators. However, if you are using the storage container to store sensitive goods we recommend that you open the doors on a regular basis to enable the storage container to breathe. This is more important during periods of extreme cold or hot weather. It is also a good idea not to lean or stack sensitive goods directly against the walls of the storage container.

Container Transport

I am unsure whether the lorry will be able to deliver to me, can you do check first?

We can come and do a site visit to check whether a delivery is possible.

I want my container sited under an overhead cable is this possible?

Sites should always be checked for overhead cables. If the cables are more than 12m high it is possible to operate underneath them. If they are less you need to find an alternative site for your container or arrange for the cables to be taken down whilst we make the delivery.

How large will the delivery HIAB lorry be?

20ft containers are delivered on a six wheel rigid lorry which is 10m long and 2.7m wide. 40ft containers are delivered on an articulated lorry which is 18m long and 2.7m wide.

There is no road access to where I want my container. Does this mean it cannot be delivered?

We can use large cranes to lift units over buildings, Telehandlers to cross rough terrain and skates to move units into low buildings. Lack of access doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t deliver a container to you.

Will the lorry drive off road across fields etc?

Our HIAB lorries will generally not leave hard standing, but in some situations, with prior consultation, lorries may be able to do this.

I have underground cables or pipelines in the delivery area, will this affect the delivery?

Please notify us if there are any underground pipes or cables and we will arrange the delivery so they are not disturbed.

Can a container be dropped over a wall from the road?

It is possible to drop a container over a wall but you need to ensure that the parking space required is free and possibly coned off the night before. We cannot block busy roads to make a delivery.

Are you able to give an accurate delivery time?

We do whatever we can to ensure that your container is delivered when you require it, but because we are reliant on British roads and the lorry having been unloaded promptly at its previous job we cannot guarantee delivery times. Asking to be the first job of the day is your best chance of getting your container delivered at a specified time.

What is the best way to pack my unit?

Place heavy and large items on the bottom and stack lighter boxes etc on top. Remember to leave things you may require at the front of the unit for easy access. Remember not to keep important documents such as passports in your unit.

Are there any things I should bear in mind before moving into my unit?

Ensure all washing machine and dishwashers are drained of water and that fridges and freezers are defrosted. Any moisture entering your unit cannot get out and could be a possible source of water damage and mould.

If storing items with a fuel tank (lawn mowers, strimmers etc) ensure fuel is completely drained before storing.

Breakables should be wrapped in bubble wrap to protect them.

Refrigeration Services

What type and size of units can we hire?

We have large containers which can be used as refrigerated units and these are either 20 or 40 feet long by 8ft wide and 8ft 6in high.

We also have available our smaller trailers which are 10ft long by 6ft wide by 7ft high.

What power supply is required?

The larger refrigerated containers require a 32A 440V three phase supply.

The smaller refrigerated trailers require a 13A 240v single phase supply (standard domestic supply).

I do not have a power supply, is it possible to run the refrigeration units from a generator?

Yes, it is possible to run the refrigerated units from a generator.

What temperature will the units maintain?

A refrigerated container is capable of operating to -25°c, some units, if required, will heat as well.

Our refrigerated trailers will chill and freeze. A chill trailer will go as low as 0°c and a freezer as low as -20° c. When ordering refrigerated trailers please inform us if you want chill or freeze capabilities.

How long is the electrical cable?

The cable on both types of unit is 10m long.

What sort of plug will my refrigerated unit have?

Refrigerated containers will have a 5pin 32A plug. However, if your power supply has a 4 pin plug then we can change it before it is sent to you.

Refrigerated trailers have a blue 16A 240V plug. We supply an adaptor which converts it to a standard domestic 13A plug if required.

Do I have to think about anything when positioning the refrigerated unit?

You need to leave a 1m gap behind the unit to enable the air to move freely round the refrigeration unit. Also you need the leave a 1.5m space at the front of the unit to allow the doors to be opened.

What can I do to ensure trouble free operation?

Ensure the unit is loaded correctly to ensure correct air circulation (see below). Ensure door openings are kept to a minimum, if the door is left open for long periods of time ice can build up around the machinery and eventually lead to machinery failure.

How do I load my refrigeration unit?

Space needs to be left around the cargo to ensure that the air can circulate. It is best to place your products on pallets so the air can get underneath it. A space should also be left under the ceiling to aid circulation.
